I caught a news story tonight on our local ABC news channel that made my blood boil. It was a story about a 15 year old boy who started a website called “The No Cussing Club.” At first I thought, “Good for him. What a brave thing to do.” But as I continued watching, I was shocked at what I was hearing.
“…he’s now getting Internet death threats. People who oppose his efforts have been calling him at all hours, sending him porn magazines, and worse.”
What! Yeah…it gets better.
The people who have been blasting the No Cussing Club consider the group an affront to their freedom of speech, an effort to censor Americans.
Come on, people! He’s a 15 year old boy! Give him a break! This kid is not going around petitioning the government to stop profanity. He’s taking a stand against something and last time I checked, that is called freedom of speech.
But let’s look at this through the lens of scripture. I quickly got over my shock when I called to mind Paul’s words to young Timothy.
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self…revilers…unholy, unloving, irreconcilable…without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…. 2 Timothy 3:1-4.
Paul predicts this type of behavior. We really shouldn’t be surprised at all. But that does not mean we sit by idly and do nothing. Certainly this boy has taken up the good fight and a stand against profanity. We just need to remember something else Paul said to Timothy:
Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 2 Timothy 3:12
The great news about this story is that in the last two years, he has over 30,000 members nationwide! Bravo!
I like how the story closes and what his dad says:
McKay says his antagonists don’t seem to understand how the club works. People sign up voluntarily and pledge to clean up their curse words. His dad says McKay is an easy target because he is trying to do something different.
