40 Days for Life

In my blog reading today, I ran across a few posts about the 40 Days for Life Campaign. Today, February 25, is Day One. Although my blog probably won’t do much to help the cause, I want to at least attempt to help out in some way, thus this post.

From their website:

40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program:

  • Prayer and fasting
  • Constant vigil
  • Community outreach

Some statistics that I was able to garner from Guttmacher Institute (keep in mind these are just for the United States):

  • “From 1973 through 2005, more than 45 million legal abortions occurred.”
  • “The reasons women give for having an abortion underscore their understanding of the responsibilities of parenthood and family life. Three-fourths of women cite concern for or responsibility to other individuals; three-fourths say they cannot afford a child; three-fourths say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or the ability to care for dependents; and half say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner.”
  • “Even without specific parental involvement laws, six in 10 minors who have an abortion report that at least one parent knew about it.”

The only good news about the numbers is that the trends show declines in abortion rates. But the numbers are still astronomically and disgustingly high. If we aren’t praying about this issue on a regular basis, we need to.

May He Increase!
