The Purpose of the Believer

My coworker asked me this morning: “Our sole purpose as believers: what do you think that is?”

It was a little early. I had just logged on and hadn’t had my morning coffee yet. But we must be ready in and out of season, right? (2 Timothy 4:2). We had the following dialog.

“To give glory to God,” I replied.

“By doing what?”

“To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. And to love our neighbor as ourselves.”

“And how do we do that?” she asked.

“Everything we do, say, think, etc. has God’s glory in mind and His purpose. We seek to do His will.”

“By seeking Him and spending time with Him in His Word because He is the Word,” she added.

So this got me to thinking about this question: what is our sole purpose as believers? The scripture that came to mind immediately when she asked me was from Matthew.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” –Matthew 22:36-40.

My coworker and I were in agreement during our IM conversation. But I wanted to share it here and ask for your thoughts. So what say you:

What is the sole purpose of the believer?

  1. Ike says:

We were created to worship God. The whole story of our redemption retells how we were created to worship God but by our sin became disqualified from that true and authentic worship. By God’s redemption in Jesus Christ, we were created anew for the purpose of worshiping God. And every glimpse of heaven we have in Scripture indicates that worship will be our eternal occupation. It is for that purpose that we are being prepared even in the present.

  2. Good answer, Ike!
