The October print edition of the Christian Examiner had a write up on a recent study done by the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) where they found that home-schooled high schoolers scored a full point higher than the national average.
Some of the findings include:
The new ACT results also support the numerous studies which show that homeschoolers are out-performing their public school peers in K–12. The latest study from the National Home Education Research Institute shows that the average homeschooler scores 37 percentile points higher on standardized achievement test than the average public schooled student.
One comment I found interesting was:
The average public school spends $10,000 per child per year whereas the average homeschooler spends $500 per child per year. Homeschooling is also growing rapidly. The National Center for Education Statistics, part of the Federal Department of Education, estimates that homeschooling is growing at around 7% per year.
Personally, I think the $500 figure they quote is a little low. Granted, it’s the “average” but I think we’re spending more than that with our home schooler.

As hard as home schooling may be at times, I’m grateful for those moments when my wife comes out from my stepson’s room to tell me what he’s learned that day; something lasting. Something that blesses God Almighty.
“Moreover, they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.” –Ezekiel 44:23.
This is what my stepson is learning: what is holy and what is profane. He won’t have to be taught revisionist history and the progressive and liberal agendas. He will be learning truth! God’s truth! And for that, I’m truly grateful and encouraged in spite of the obstacles we face from time-to-time.
May He Increase!
