As much as I understood what he means by that, part of me doesn't see an issue with going on Black Friday sales to save a buck on things we needed (like winter clothes for my 2-year old son). I think it's all in how you view "Black Friday." I never really enjoyed it much because, as a rule, I despise shopping. My wife--like most women I think--enjoy shopping. It's really a female thing that I will never understand.
I think a lot of Christians throw the baby out with the bathwater on this subject. Consider the Proverbs 31 woman:

She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight. She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard. --Proverbs 31:13-16.

My wife is a savvy shopper. She refuses to buy things that are not on sale or we don't have a coupon for it. I'm just the opposite: though I hate shopping, if I see something I need or want, I'll just get it (if I can afford it). My wife will tell me the dozens of other places I could have gone to to get the item cheaper. It drives her nuts.
Maybe I doth protest too much on this point. I see nothing wrong with going out on Black Friday to pick up items cheaply/cheaper. What I do take issue with, however, is going out, trampling over people, just to find happiness in material things. They don't satisfy.
As it turned out, I didn't want to get up at 5:00 am. I stayed home with my son while my wife went out with her sister and picked up a few things.

It’s interesting . . . <a
