The Prophecy of Zacharias: Part VII
Posted By Joe on December 23, 2009
Over the course of these last seven posts on Zacharias' prophecy, we have seen God's wonderful revelation of Jesus and John the Baptist.
Christmas 2009 is two days away. It's my hope that you have been able to see something fresh by looking at these verses uttered by Zacharias, after having been mute for the nine months of Elizabeth's pregnancy!
Zacharias' Prophecy - Part VII: The Light in the Darkness
"To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." --Luke 1:79.
Zacharias ends his prophecy by quoting from the Old Testament book of Isaiah.
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them. --Isaiah 9:2.
There are so many implications in this passage. The most obvious is that the world is a dark place. Jesus is the great light spoken of here. But it's interesting to note that Jesus calls the believer to be a light to the world.
We are all in darkness and in the shadow of death until we are born again. God, who is a spirit, became flesh in the person of Jesus. We remember His birth as the incarnate, Mighty God. More than that, this baby was born to die. Jesus was born to carry the weight of the sins of the world upon Himself. In doing so, we might live with Him forever in His heavenly kingdom.
Don't spend another Christmas on meaningless and frivolous gifts; on things that you can throw away and forget. Make this Christmas the one that you accept God's free gift of salvation.
But don't mistake free for worthless! This is a gift that was bought and paid for by His own blood, shed for you and me. It cost Him everything, in order to stamp your debt "tetelestai": Paid-in-full! (Colossians 2:14).
May He Increase!
